He is a theater director and full professor at the School of Theater of the Federal University of Bahia. He has a degree in Germanic Languages and Theater Theory – Universität zu Köln (1961). He holds an MA in Dramatic Arts (1981) and a PhD in Theater (1983) both from the University of California System. His research interest is in Arts, focusing on direction and scenario, mainly on the following topics: theater direction, theater, acting, dramatic reading, and interpretation. He was the advisor of two winning dissertations of the Capes Dissertation Award: in 2013, Martim Gonçalves – Uma Escola de Teatro contra a Província by Jussilene Santana do Nascimento Gadelha; and, in 2014, Práxis cênica como articulação de visualidade: a luz na gênese do espetáculo by Eduardo Augusto da Silva Tudella.
